It’s the weekend again and the malls will be buzzing with pre-Christmas sales and various store launches. We had a big one just last week with the crazed public’s warm reception to H&M’s flagship store opening in the Philippines.
Kicking off the 3-Day Mega Sale last weekend at the SM Megamall, throngs of Filipinos witnessed the opening of the 3-floor shop-till-you-drop fast-fashion brand to a roaring frenzy. The lines were long and the people were ecstatic and fashion has worn over the public like nothing you’ve ever seen before.
But while that’s happening, a relatively tiny but significant store humbly opened alongside the Swedish multinational fashion retail giant. TOMS, the fashion brand founded on the principles of social-responsibility and helping less fortunate communities, has opened their flagship store in SM Megamall Fashion Hall last October 17, 2014.
In 2006, TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie (who also happens to be a finalist in the Amazing Race Season 2) befriended children in a village in Argentina and found they had no shoes to protect their feet. Wanting to help, he created TOMS, a company that would match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. This sparked TOMS’s selling principle called One for One.
One for One literally means that for every shoe that you purchase from TOMS, the company gives one pair to a child in need somewhere across the globe or even within the Philippines. Realizing that One for One could serve other global needs, Blake launched TOMS Eyewear in 2011 to help restore sight to people in need with every purchase of TOMS Sunglasses and Optical frames. In 2014, TOMS Roasting Co. launched with the mission to provide clean water to communities in need with the purchase of premium coffee (and yes, folks, the coffee is amazing).
While the cause of the brand is important, people really line up to TOMS for their shoes. Ranging from slip-ons to laced-up and even boot-cuts, TOMS has everything for everyone – even the kiddies.
I was able to try one of their signature shoes – the Alden Cordones and I must say, this is one canvas sneaks I wouldn’t mind bring along my travels. Compared to regular sneakers, TOMS shoes are amazingly light on the feet. The hidden elastic bands create a snug fit on your feet that you can opt to wear them without laces while the rubber sole cushions your foot in chaussure heaven!
The same design aesthetic is applied to pretty much every other footwear that they have in store and, yes, this means even their Wing Tip Oxford is light and comfy.
While the prices are a bit steep (4-5k for men’s shoes and around 7-8k for sunglasses), TOMS’s One for One philosophy makes this a worth-while endeavor and a cause that’s worthy support. After all, they can only keep giving if you keep buying.
TOMS’s flagship store is located at the 3rd level of the SM Megamall Fashion Hall.
